Many people have seen the film Forrest Gump, directed by Robert Zemekis. The film was released on July 6, 1994 and has grossed over six hundred and seventy eight million dollars. The story follows a man named Forrest Gump (played by Tom Hanks), a slow-witted but caring man from Alabama. A large part of the story is of Forrest reflecting on the historical and personal events that have led up to where he is in his life. Including overcoming the disadvantages of a curved spine, inspiring Elvis’ “Hound Dog” dance, meeting several presidents and fighting in the Vietnam War.

His adventures always lead him to the love of his life, Jenny (played by Robin Wright), a sweet girl troubled by her past. When Jenny leaves Forrest in the middle of the night he becomes broken-hearted and runs across the country. Forrest’s journey takes him through many places, and he has many revelations about the events of his life. He pays homage to his friend from Vietnam, Bubba (Mykelti Williamson), by finishing his dream of being a shrimping boat captain. He remembers his mother (Sally Field), who was always there for him, and her tragic death to cancer.

Eventually Forrest stops running and realizes that it is time for him to go back home. Not soon after learns that he and Jenny have a son. Jenny reveals to him that she has contracted AIDS from her past of abusing hard drugs. They decide to get married although Jenny does not have much time left. Upon her death Forrest cares for his son and reflects on all that he has lost and all that he has gained. Forrest goes on to say, “I don’t know if we each have a destiny. Or if we are all floating around accidentally on a breeze. But I think maybe it’s both. Both happening at the same time.” Forrest impacts the lives of all those around him for the better by spreading his optimism and kind thoughts to all he crosses paths with.

The film is credited as one of Tom Hanks best movies and personally I have to agree. The acting and story create a very emotional tale about a kind hearted man from Alabama. The score by Alan Silvestri is excellent. I believe that Forrest Gump is an amazing movie that shows the importance of love, kindness, and the overall meaning of life because you never really know what you’re going to get.
