This just in! Salida High School’s Knowledge Bowl team made it to state! Led by SHS social studies teacher Anderson Horne, the team navigated through a series of challenging rounds, showcasing their diverse range of expertise in subjects such as history, science, mathematics and literature. The team’s effort helped propel them to state. They all learned and contributed so much along the way, and each member contributes their unique strengths. Throughout their run, the Spartans faced stiff competition from other schools, particularly Alamosa.
“We were top in the region for a while, Alamosa kinda bumped us out of the top spot,” said Horne.
For practice, the team simulates a competition complete with buzzers and time limits, and Horne is currently working on sending out a book of old questions so that participants can practice with their family and friends, or by themselves, in order to set the Spartans up for success in the future.
The state tournament is strictly a varsity tournament made up of 6-12 people that was held at Aims Community College in Greeley, Colorado. During the competition, the contestants must remain silent, so the team uses hand signals and numbers to communicate during the competition. Sometimes, if everyone is stumped and has no idea what the answer would be, and to lessen the tension of competition, a team member will say something funny or “smart aleck” while being careful to not steal anyone’s thunder.
Overall, the season turned out to be a huge success for the Spartans. The guidance of Horne and the stellar participants made the season fun and productive. The team really wants to knock Alamosa out of top place, and, with new people coming in next year, the program is sure to blossom. Horne commended their participation and outstanding performance, highlighting the importance of academic participation in fostering critical thinking and collaboration. The Spartans demonstrated tremendous teamwork and sportsmanship throughout this season.
Although the championship eluded them this time, the Spartans journey was filled with fun and progress. The team’s camaraderie and passion for knowledge were evident, earning them respect from peers and educators alike. As the Spartans regroup for future competitions they remain determined and plan to continue on pursuing the State title. Horne is eager for next season and the years following. This year, the passion for learning and absorbing knowledge is evident in the team’s practices. The increase in participation, passion and desire from all of the team members will surely propel the Spartans to a state title next year. Good luck next year, Knowledge Bowl!
