One of our most loved teachers, Amy Moore, has decided to take a break from teaching and will not be returning next year. She is one of the current history teachers and will be greatly missed. This summer, Moore plans on continuing nursing school while subbing and teaching specials over at Crest Academy.
“I envision myself continuing to be a part of the Salida community, coming back and working here after I go to school– just contributing in a different way,” said Moore.
Moore gained her passion for history through her fathers own love and passion for the subject. She grew up hearing stories of her grandparents’ experiences during World War II. Over the years, she gained a new love for history and knew it was something she wanted to pursue in college. She found that social studies education was the right path for her. Moore takes pride in making history relatable and understandable to all students.
“I feel like sometimes it can feel really daunting because history is so big and there’s so much to it, but when you bring it down to the personal level of what individuals experience at different points in time and how their experiences impact their actions […] I think it starts to become a lot more understandable,” said Moore
Moore’s favorite part of teaching is getting to interact with students and see them improve on their skills. She likes to see students become proud of themselves and their accomplishments. Moore will miss developing relationships with students and not having a part in the education process.
“I like to see students start to feel more confident in their reading or their writing or in their mastery of different skills,” said Moore
Teaching doesn’t always come with rewards. Some days you are faced with challenges. Moore says her biggest challenge was not engaging in power struggles with students. She says being able to work with different personalities was a challenge as well. Work life balance was also a struggle for her as well. Moore is excited to get to spend more time with her family this summer.
“This is a job that’s so easy to pour every ounce of yourself into and so being present for my family has also been a challenge,” said Moore
Moore wants students to keep asking questions and staying curious. The advice she leaves for students is to maintain the pursuit of what they’re passionate about and to never stop learning. Moore is grateful for the time she was able to work with colleagues and students and is thankful for everything they taught her along the way.
“There’s always more that we can learn, there’s always more that we can do. We can always continue to improve ourselves and to just continue on that lifelong process because education doesn’t stop when you leave the building our entire lives we are always learning and so embrace that,” Moore said.
