Ever since I was little, I’ve had a thing for music. When I was a kid, I had microphone toys that sang different songs from a lot of different Disney movies. They were my favorite toys. I’ve always been obsessed with singing. There is an old video of me, about three or four years old, standing in front of the tv with Taylor Swift playing in the background, and I am singing along with her. My first concert was Taylor Swift– I was about eight years old and I stood on my chair and sang every word to every song on the setlist. When I was a kid, me and my family would watch American Idol, and I would always wonder what it would be like to be on the show one day.
In elementary school, music was my favorite class of the day. However, I was disappointed when I got to fifth grade because I wasn’t able to be in a choir class, but in sixth grade I was finally able to join. Being in choir allowed me to have an outlet to express myself. The middle school drama was expressed through my music. I was also in band, but I felt like my voice needed to be heard, which is why choir has always been my thing. I was in choir all of the years I possibly could be in middle school. My choir teacher, Ms. Oglesby, taught me a lot. She was the one who made my voice better: she taught me solfege and everything rhythm wise. She was the one who made me want to go on and pursue this little dream of mine. Maybe I can say I’m finally getting to bigger and better things, such as my upcoming New York trip.
On April tenth, the SHS choir left for Carnegie Hall! It was a once and a lifetime opportunity that everyone was so incredibly grateful to have. We sang about seven songs with a ton of other choirs from around the world. The songs we sang were all up to college level pieces. We worked really hard on these songs, and we were super excited to go!! It was a very fun thing to do and an extremely challenging thing to do as well. I learned a lot about choir and everything vocal, as well as make new friends and grow stronger bonds with the people the choir had brought into my life. Choir is a big family. Singing at Carnegie Hall was the best experience of my life! Carnegie was beautiful! It had these red velvet seats and gold detail on the walls.
