Ivonne Guzman has worn many hats throughout her career, and each one has been shaped by her love of people and her ability to thrive in organized chaos. From working in a doctor’s office, to a radio station, and now at a school, she has built a life centered around helping others and staying busy. “I have worked for a doctor’s office for about seven years where I was a receptionist, billing person, medical assistant, and interpreter,” Guzman shared. “I’ve also worked at a radio station for several years.”
However, it’s her current role, working as a secretary at the Salida High School, that allows Guzman to balance both her work life and family. With two children in school — a senior and a sophomore — the position lets her be a part of their high school experience in a whole new way. “My kids, having a similar schedule and being around them is what drew me,” she explained, “I like being busy, I like being around people, and this is the perfect place for that.”
As part of her daily duties, Guzman’s primary focus is ensuring the smooth operation of the school, especially when teachers are absent. “My biggest task for the moment is finding subs for teachers if they have a day off, making sure they’re covered if they call in sick,” she said. “Either I find a substitute, or I ask other teachers to help cover during their time off.” With four children, four dogs, and two cats at home, Guzman is no stranger to handling a hectic environment, and it’s a skill she’s mastered. “It comes naturally. Just breathe through it and move on. It doesn’t tear my world apart.”
What she enjoys most about her role, however, is the daily interaction with both students and teachers. “The kids, seeing different personalities interact with each other, comparing the way I was when I was in school and the way I acted with my friends, that’s the biggest thing I enjoy,” Guzman said. “And the teachers. I love working with the teachers and being their person to help and cover the day. That makes me feel needed.”
One of the most exciting moments for Guzman this year is watching her daughter Katherine, a senior, prepare for graduation. Guzman will play a big part in organizing the ceremony, a moment she looks forward to with both pride and joy. “Watching her take that next step to adulthood is a blessing in my eyes,” she said. “And in the future, watching the kids that I watch grow up from juniors to seniors is going to be amazing.” As Guzman continues to juggle her busy life with grace and humor, her dedication to her family, her work, and the school community remains at the heart of everything she does. Whether managing the daily chaos of school or watching her children grow, she finds fulfillment in all of the tasks she takes on.
