The National Honors Society is a group of high school students that focuses on volunteer work and leadership in the local community. This means they volunteer at events and organize things, like the local blood drive, which they are planning to do twice a year. Each National Honor Society member is required to do at least 10 hours of community service per year, which is to make sure that they are involved in the community and fulfilling the purpose of the National Honor Society which is to cultivate leadership skills and connection to communities among younger generations. The National Honor Society originally consisted of only juniors and seniors, but at Salida High School this year, sophomores will now be allowed to join the National Honor Society, pending the confirmation of new bylaws. These sophomores will only be allowed to join if they have a 3.8 GPA or higher. In addition to the change of allowing sophomores, applicants will now need to do two hours of community service.
Another large change coming to the NHS is the way they run their elections. Formerly, elections were held at the beginning of each year, but now they will be held at the start of the second semester. This is because it gives time for the new leadership board to get used to leading while still having the resources of the old leadership board there to help them. It will also take stress off graduating seniors for the last semester of their High School career, allowing the juniors to take over. The NHS had a blood drive on May 1st, and there will be another at the high school through the Red Cross on November 3rd.
