I can’t believe I’m already a senior in high school. I’ve been in Salida, Colorado all my life and I have never thought about being this old. When I was in elementary school, I thought the year 2026 was so far away. It all sounded unreal and now I’m here; a senior in the town I grew up in.
I feel as if my entire life has happened in a snap of two fingers. I have so many memories from my years of school. I remember my kindergarten graduation—how important and grown up I felt at the time. As I’m starting a new chapter, it all seems out of reach. Although I’m nervous, I am excited for my future.
I know little me is looking up and is so proud of what we’ve become. She would be shocked that I don’t have dyed hair and that I feel beautiful no matter what I wear. She would be upset that we don’t want to be an architect or a teacher, and are instead pursuing cosmetology. She would understand though. She would be glad to know that our best friend is still our best friend and would be baffled that we made it through middle school. I know she would love who we are today, and without her, I wouldn’t be who I am today.
Being in my last year of high school has definitely made me reflect on my life. I would still choose the same people, activities, and decisions because without them I wouldn’t be Lila Chavez. I am so grateful for life and the beauty that comes with it, and the opportunities and people that I have met. I wish the best of luck to the kids I grew up with for our senior year! Yay class of 2026!
