This year is my third year of high school, but it is very different from my first two. This year, we have transitioned from a block schedule to an A day, B day schedule. During these first few weeks of school, I have been getting used to this switch and am on the fence about this change.
This year I am playing golf for the high school team and I miss a lot of school for tournaments. What I don’t like about the schedule is there are more classes every week to stay on top of. I do believe that it is great for stacking credits and being able to get more credits. However, for the students who are missing school for sports and other extracurricular activities, this schedule could be the reason they are behind in class.
Homecoming week brings activities and competitions, which are highly anticipated. Some of the activities I have participated in before are Peach Fuzz, Powderpuff, and other activities like spike ball or ultimate frisbee. Peach Fuzz and Powderpuff are both iconic homecoming activities. For Peach Fuzz the boys play volleyball, and for Powderpuff the girls play flag football. Last year I played on the sophomore boys Peach Fuzz team and I coached for Powderpuff. One of the things I love about homecoming, other than the dance and the fun activities, are the sports matches. I love how the strong school spirit brought by homecoming influences the students to show up and support our teams.
Another thing I love about the school year is participating in sports. Like I mentioned before, I am playing golf right now. This is my first year playing for the team and I am really enjoying it so far. However I also play basketball and baseball. I am really looking forward to the basketball season because last year I got hurt and my season was cut short. One thing I love about participating in school sports is the connections I get to make with my teammates, whether that’s playing the sport or the whole sports experience. I believe there is a difference between participating in the sport itself and all the little things in between. Sure, I love playing the games, but laughing on the bus rides and eating with my teammates is something I love as well. Though school can be very stressful and overwhelming there are definitely things to enjoy about it.
