If you were to ask any student what their best memory of high school was, it most likely wouldn’t be the test taking, homework, or exams. It’s the exciting moments – events like dances, spirit weeks, or even late night football games! These moments create special memories and make school something to look forward to.
Yet schools limit these experiences to a few per year. Fun events such as dances aren’t just about the loud music and flashing lights; they give students motivation and occasions to be thrilled for. Plus, let’s be honest, it becomes easier to fall into a slump when your routine feels more exhausting than engaging.
Adding more events throughout the school year would provide multiple opportunities and benefits for both students and staff. They would encourage a stronger school community, where people are able to socialize in an environment that isn’t solely focused on academics. Along with the many social benefits, events can fundraise money that gives back to where it is needed. Whether it is used for sports, clubs, trips, or even making said events more enjoyable, more students would want to be involved if the school showed their effort in curating a fun and flexible system that gives stressed and hardworking students well-needed mental breaks. They will have the ability to express themselves as more than just their knowledge and participate in activities that they don’t already frequently get access to.
At the end of day, school is worth being remembered as more than just repetitive studying and grades. School needs to be somewhere everyone can be included in some way and a place to make memories that last a lifetime. By introducing more into school schedules, school wouldn’t just be ‘more fun.’ It would be a place that allows everyone to thrive and pushes typical days away from being just typical.
