Clubs are one of the most unique aspects of being a Salida High School student, and have given students something to look forward to every Thursday for almost five years now. Salida High School Assistant Principal Abigail Cooksey said, “One of the things I love about Salida Highschool Students is that 80% of our students are involved in athletics.” However, this caused the issue of working around extracurriculars when organizing after-school clubs, and thus advisory clubs were created.
Clubs allow for a space of flowing creativity and expression among students, friends and teachers. They take place during advisory on Thursday and support one of the four important pillars of advisory: belonging. Clubs allow all different kinds of students to gather and do something fun as groups, and set aside school once a week. They have helped create many bonds and allowed students to find common interests and hobbies, and make many new memories. They have also been very helpful in allowing student athletes to be able stay involved in other activities without missing out on their after-school sport.
Cooksey explained, “If any students are ever interested in starting a club or have something that they don’t feel like is being offered, they should come and bring up the idea to Mrs. Christensen, Mrs. Catalano, or myself.”
SHS Sophomore Grace Koken, a member of the Queer Student Alliance and performing arts clubs, explained that she appreciates that clubs give a break from advisory classes to just do something fun, and being able to escape day-to-day stress for a little while. She said that her least favorite part of clubs is forgetting to eat lunch.
This year, clubs are on a new cycle, with the opportunity to sign up for and try a new club every six weeks. With 23 clubs to choose from, this provides students with more chances to branch out and try new things.
Whatever club you choose, this time can be a great opportunity for Salida High School students to take a break from academics for just 50 minutes each week to try something new and fun!
