The Salida High School track and field squad is finding its stride this spring, displaying the sort of resolve and school spirit that turns a good season into a memorable one.
Across every event—from the power of the throwers to the grit of the distance crew—the Spartans are building momentum and making it clear: this is a team to watch. They’re not just competing. They’re believing.
“The energy this year is different,” said senior captain Vincent Mazzeo. “Everyone’s locked in. We’re not just showing up—we’re showing out.”
It is visible on the track. The boys’ 4×400 relay crew has been trimming seconds each week. Girls’ distance team has been encountering top-five placements meet after meet. Track athletes are re-breaking personal bests, and underclassman teammates are performing key roles confidently.
Mazzeo, as much of a leader as he is a sprinter, has established the tone for the season with his work ethic and voice. “Success isn’t always about medals,” he stated. “It’s about knowing you left everything on the track. That’s what we’re doing—every single day.”
The team has battled tough conditions with chilly mornings, strenuous travel days, and tough competition. However, instead of buckling, they’ve doubled down against the challenge. “Pressure doesn’t break us,” Mazzeo said. “It sharpens us. That’s the Spartan mindset.”
Heading into the final stretch of the season, with regionals fast approaching, there’s one thing that’s clear: Salida is running with purpose. The chemistry, the drive, the belief, it’s all coming together.
