High school teaches us a lot, like how to solve equations, analyze equations, and how to understand history and science. But one very important life skill is missing from the schedule: how to cook. Many students graduate without ever learning how to prepare a basic meal. I think that learning how to cook isn’t just about the food, but a gateway to independence.
Cooking is an essential life skill. I would love to learn how to cook basic meals, like pasta or eggs and rice with vegetables, for myself and friends. A cooking class would give students the confidence to feed themselves and take care of their basic needs when they move away from home.
Cooking at home is often healthier, too. Teenagers are surrounded by easy but unhealthy food options, from vending machines to fast food restaurants. A cooking class could teach students how to prepare balanced meals, understand nutrition and use fresh ingredients.
Cooking can also teach students how to budget. Groceries can be very expensive these days and many people don’t realize how much money they can save by just cooking at home. Understanding how to shop for ingredients and cook affordable meals can help students manage their money better when they eventually live on their own.
Cooking classes can also teach communication and team work. Preparing a meal can often involve others. In a classroom kitchen, students would need to cooperate and work together to make a meal. Students could experiment with different food items, try new foods and experiment with recipes. For some students, a more hands-on learning approach can be beneficial.
Some people may argue that kids can learn this at home by watching videos or learning from parents. Some families are busy. Some students might not have access to a kitchen. And some might simply not know where to start. A school cooking class could offer that would make sure that every student has the chance to learn these important skills in a structured and supportive environment.
A cooking class could teach skills that students would use long after they leave high school. If schools truly want to prepare students for the real world, then teaching them how to cook is a great place to start.
