YoungBoy Never Broke Again is an artist who grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I think he is one of the greatest artists of all time, considering he has made songs with multiple flows, nontraditional beats, and broadly relatable lyrics. When listening to music I notice musical flow—and no I don’t have a superpower, it’s just an observation that anyone can make. The definition of musical flow is the rhythmic delivery or patterns of lyrics. What I believe makes YoungBoy NBA stand out is his ability to create this musical flow in various ways. I think this also makes him more enjoyable to listen to because some songs sound similar while others are different.
This is the reason I believe he is one of the most versatile artists. Some artists can only sing on slower and less bouncy beats but one of the things YoungBoy NBA does is sing on these hip hop style beats. Recently Mellow Rackz released an EP that included a song named FUN. YoungBoy NBA was featured on this song and was the only one to rap on it. What makes this song significant is the beat. YoungBoy can rap on various beats and this song’s beat has a sample from the song you all know as Girls Just Want to Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper. This song by Cyndi is of the pop genre, which is very different from rap.
This brings up another reason why I enjoy listening to him: he has multiple songs for different moods. YoungBoy NBA has released 34 projects since his debut album 38 Baby, which dropped on October 27, 2016, not counting singles or EPs. This is a ton of music, and he plans to release more albums in the future. If I am feeling sad, a few songs I will listen to are Drawing Symbols, RIP Dump, or All In. YoungBoy NBA also has many songs talking about love. What I like about these songs is they show a different side of him, and they can be relatable to anyone depending on a given relationship status.
Another reason I think YoungBoy NBA stands out amongst these other artists is because he chooses subjects that are unique to traditional rap or hip hop. When he records a song he explains what is going on with him, and he doesn’t try to rap like anyone else. This is something I appreciate because it takes a lot of heart to be able to continue to be yourself, especially when people are criticizing you and spreading hate about you.
I believe that music is something that can change your life, and if you can create meaning around what you listen to then you shouldn’t stop listening to that music, No matter what people have to say.
