Clash Royale is significantly harder than chess. Clash Royale is a game released in 2016, a sequel to the older Clash of Clans. Clash Royale is a strategic, real-time, card-based game consisting of three towers, two princess towers and one king tower. Players compete in short, intense matches, deploying troops to try and attack the other opponents’ towers. Sounds like a simple mobile game, however beneath the game lies a deeply complex system of strategy, timing and philosophical thinking that arguably surpasses the game known as chess.
Chess has existed for many centuries and is widely known as the ultimate test of strategy and intellect. However, its gameplay is static with no rule updates or new characters. Both players have the same resources and equal information from the beginning. There are no surprises or hidden variables. Every move in chess can be calculated, predicted, and countered. On the other hand, Clash Royale introduces dynamic elements that make it unpredictable. Players must make rapid fire decisions under immense pressure while marginalizing elixir (a resource in the game used for deploying troops or cards). The constantly changing battlefield and the unpredictability of opponents’ cards creates far more panic than a game of chess.
Unlike chess, Clash Royale is a “pay to win” game meaning players are able to purchase higher-tier characters or upgrade characters before others that don’t have the fortune of using their money for online games. Clash Royale also updates, balances, and nerfs their games monthly, leading to people’s cards becoming “unplayable” or useless. For most months, the developers add a new “evolution” which is made to be an overpowered card to balance other cards. From all of these evolutions, Clash Royale has created chaotic card decks and overpowered methods to win.
In reflection, Clash Royale represents more than just a mobile game—it’s a constantly evolving test of adaptability, foresight, patience and emotional control. Unlike chess, where mastery comes from centuries of fixed knowledge, success in Clash Royale demands continual learning, experimentation and adjustment to the constant new updates, strategies and metas. Its unpredictability mirrors real life: no matter how carefully one plans, circumstances can change in an instant, forcing players to think creatively and respond under pressure. Perhaps that’s what makes Clash Royale not only harder than chess, but it is also a truer reflection of modern strategy itself—a battle of minds shaped as much by change as by skill, resilience and innovation.
