As the most intelligent animals on the planet, we sure do have some funny habits with absolutely no point. All of us do little things which make no sense, so I wanted to rate the top five which make the absolute least sense to me. These are all things we all do, know we do, and still do them, maybe proving that intelligence doesn’t always equal logic.
Number five: Saying “what”, then answering the question anyway.
This is one we are all guilty of. Saying “what”, then answering before the person even has time to repeat or rephrase the question. We clearly heard them the first time and still say this as a clarification question. Maybe it’s because our brain is buffering, or we are trying to get one more second to think. Either way it’s mostly useless and can be filled with different words that makes more sense and accomplish the task better, yet we will continue to do it.
Number four: Checking the fridge multiple times without expecting new food.
We open the fridge, look inside, close it, walk away and then come back 5 minutes later to open it again. Do we do this because we are hoping for something different, hoping our taste has changed or maybe hoping we missed something? Why do we do this even though we know that it’s highly unlikely anything has changed in the last 5 minutes.
Number three: Pretending not to see someone to avoid a conversation.
Isn’t it weird how we avoid someone we know by finding something very boring, highly interesting and attention grabbing. We suddenly find the ground, the calculator app, or taking a “very important” phone call very interesting. The funny thing is, the other person is probably doing or has done the same thing. Instead of just saying a simple “hi” we do this awkward avoidance dance which benefits nobody, because this avoidance was trying to ignore the or an awkward situation which you ended up with both.
Number two: Arguing with strangers online.
Humans as a whole will spend hours on the internet getting into heated arguments with complete strangers that they will never meet, thinking their comment will change someone’s opinion. It never does. No one has ever looked at the comment and been like “wow that comment changed my whole philosophy on life”. Yet we keep trying, fueled by stubbornness and a need to be right. It can be exhausting and infuriating, yet kinda hard to resist.
Number one: Standing immediately when the plane lands.
This is the ultimate pointless habit. The moment the plane’s wheels touch the tarmac people have a whole different attitude and are consumed with the urge of standing up. The seatbelt sign is still on, the doors are still sealed and the jet bridge isn’t even close to reaching the plane. All of these factors and everyone still leaps off their seat and starts pushing to get into the aisles. I understand that they are tired and want to get off the plane, but we all know we are stuck on the plane and have nowhere to go. We all know how it goes too: filing off row by row to disembark. Maybe it gives the illusion that we are closer to “freedom” by standing up, but, again, we ALL KNOW IT’S INEFFECTIVE!
In the end, all these habits are pointless, but are still backed by logic. And though they don’t add anything to our life, we shouldn’t feel bad about it, as we all do the same thing. Unless you stand up aggressively before anyone can get out of the plane, then you should be embarrassed, kidding not kidding.
