Once it gets close to the end of the school year, all I can think about is that first day of summer. The summer weather is something I will always be a fan of because it allows you to be outside all the time. Here in Colorado, it gets super cold in the winter, which I can say I would enjoy if I were to go skiing, but other than that there isn’t much to do outside. So when summer rolls around, it opens up a whole new world of activity. One of the things I’m looking forward to doing this summer is swimming and surfing in the river.
Right at the very bottom of Salida is where the Arkansas river sits, and throughout this span, where the river is right by the town, there are four rapids. I have always loved going to the river in the summer. When it gets super hot out and you need a place to cool off, the river is the perfect place to do so. When I was younger I used to boogie board in the rapids and this summer I hope to do some surfing. Even swimming through all the rapids is super fun. What my friends and I usually do is jump in right above the first wave and float through the other three.
Last summer, after I had just gotten off work, I went camping with some of my friends. They had already gotten to the site since I had work that night. Once I made it to the site they were all around the glowing crackling fire. I sat down and we all started roasting hot dogs over the fire and having a blast. Sitting around the campfire that night, I decided I would have to do this more, and I am really excited to round up my friends for camping trips this summer.
Last summer I would go out to the golf course all the time. I really like going and playing nine holes with my friends. We would get a golf cart, hook up a speaker to our phones and tee off. I like golf because it is one of those sports where you can relax but still compete and even be out there for fun. Me and my friends would usually play for fun except for an occasional competition. We would meander through the holes laughing about a terrible shot one of us just had or very seriously discussing nonsense. I had a lot of fun playing golf last summer and am looking forward to playing this summer.
Just recently, Salida had a heat wave and it reminded me of how great the summer weather is. Now I am even more excited for summer and for all the new things I will get into. I’m slowly getting back into golf and can’t wait to be back out on the course as much as I was last summer. I’m ready for that next heat wave that will then become the summer heat we all know so I can cool off in the river. I am also hoping we can get a good amount of rain too, because I wouldn’t want to miss out on campfires this summer. So, as each day passes and we get closer to the summer, I will try even harder to hold back my excitement.
