Starting over in a new country can be both exciting and overwhelming, but for Adi Kodydkova, her transition has been filled with new friendships, supportive teachers and memorable experiences. Since arriving, she has quickly adjusted to her new surroundings and embraced the opportunities that come with starting fresh in a new school.
Kodydkova is originally from Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. Growing up in a large and historic city gave her a strong education. Although she enjoys Prague, “the teachers … they’re so friendly here, and they really care about you,” Kodydkova said.
That sense of care has made a strong impression on her. Feeling supported by teachers has helped her adjust to the new environment. She says that the school environment feels encouraging and positive.
In addition to supportive teachers, she has also found several friends here at Salida High School since arriving. She mentioned friends such as Lucy Hughes, Creed Phillips, Chloe Kelley, Lexi Hartman, and Cooper Fisher, all of which have helped her feel connected and included. With these friends, she attends SHS events like basketball and football games. These shared experiences have helped her build a sense of belonging and community in her new surroundings. Being able to socialize and participate in school events has made the transition more enjoyable.
One of the people who has made a strong impact on her school experience is her advisor, Mrs. DeMoss. “I love her. She is the best teacher,” Kodydkova said. She added that her advisor’s personality makes a big difference in her day-to-day experience. “I love her voice,” she added. “She sounds like AI.” Her positive relationship with her advisor reflects the overall welcoming atmosphere she has found at the school. Having adults she can trust and feel comfortable around has helped her feel supported as she starts this new adventure.
As she continues her journey, Kodydkova looks forward to making more memories, strengthening friendships and continuing to learn in a place where she feels valued and encouraged. Her story is a reminder that with kindness, support, and community can make a big difference in someone’s life.

The exchange student program is beneficial to so many people. My sister was an exchange student where we used to live way back in the 1960’s. Her experience was wonderful for her, and I still have many memories of all the experiences she relayed to us when she came home.
