The FibArk festival is set to arrive this June once again in Salida, Colorado. This year, FibArk has had to plan against the record breaking low water levels in the Arkansas River. In a recent update, organizers shared both excitement and transparency about what viewers should expect from this year’s event from the environmental conditions that will shape FibArks festival.
The 2026 theme, “The River United Us,” reflects the spirit of FibArk and also the realities facing our community. With record breaking low water levels, caused by the low snow pack, the communities expectations are significantly decreasing for FibArk.
These significantly low water levels have created challenges not only for recreation but also for the ecosystem that inhabit our river. Organizers emphasized that the water is a shared resource: kayakers, surfers and fishers all use this water and should be used with care.
To address these conditions, festival planners have been working closely with experts to ensure safety as the main priority. “We have consulted with AHRA, fire & safety, and many other whitewater experts about the water level and the safety of the participants,” Shores said. Because of the low flow, some traditional events will not look the same. “We will have to augment some events due to the low flow, and [we] are continuing to work on the final river event schedule,” Shores continued. The goal of FibArk officials is clear, “ensure the protection of the river and the people who participate in events in that river.”
Even with these adjustments, organizers are committed to maintaining the festival’s reputation and appeal. This year will include new attractions along with familiar favorites. Shores noted that viewers can expect “a few new bouncy house options, new delicious food, as well as some old favorites, come get those Island Noodles.” The music line-up also remains a vivid part of FibArks festival. Featured artists include Karl Denson and his band Tiny Universe, The Other Brothers and The Polish Ambassador.
Despite environmental challenges, FibArk will continue to represent more than just a festival. “FibArk is a tradition in Salida [it also] brings people together to celebrate the community and river,” Shores said. While the river may appear different this year, the purpose for FibArk is unchanged. “While the river may not look the same this year, FibArk is a spirit that lives in us and we look forward to sharing it with you this June.”
As June approaches, FibArk stands as a reflection of both environmental reality and community impact. With a new purpose of sustainability, safety, and shared experiences, the festival will continue to prove that even in difficult conditions, the river will remain strong.
