As the school year comes to a close, Salida High school students are celebrating with a jam packed week: Fun Week! Taking place during the final week of school, fun week consists of many afterschool activities giving students a chance to relax, connect with their peers and celebrate all their compliments from the year.
Fun Week kicks off on Monday after school with a mix of activities. Taking place on the Salida High School’s field, spikeball and ultimate frisbee will be the main events. Whether students are diving to save a ball or running across the field for ultimate frisbee, it will still be a blast for everyone. To wrap up Monday, there will be a movie night on Kesner Field.
Tuesday keeps the fun going with a pickleball tournament. Pickleball will happen at the aquatic center courts after school. It’s easy to learn and exciting to play for beginners just trying it out all the way to more experienced players looking for competition. The casual environment allows for everyone to feel like they can participate. Leah Paschall, a sophomore at Salida High School, says “Pickleball is a great way to bring the school together for the last week of school!”
By Wednesday, students will gather at the beach volleyball courts by the aquatic center. Whether it’s a competitive team or people just in it for fun, volleyball is always a highlight. It provides a mix of teamwork, collaboration and energy making for a fun lasting experience. It’s also one of those activities where spectators can get involved. Through cheering on their friends and enjoying the exciting atmosphere. Paschall also says, “Last time we did a volleyball tournament there was so much school participation, and I’m excited to be a part of that again!”
Finally, Thursday brings an exciting change from high school students to a community wide event. To wrap up the year Rok Skool puts on a great show called Sunfest. Taking place at the Riverside park amphitheater, the community comes together to celebrate the school year and welcome summer. With student performers ranging from 5th to 12th grade, Sunfest brings a festive finale to not just fun week but also the school year as a whole.
Beyond just the school events, what makes Fun Week so special is the way it brings the community together. Everyone comes together to either compete, spectate or help organize the events. These shared experiences help strengthen the school community and get everyone hyped through showing school spirit.
Fun Week also provides a well earned break. After months of assignments, tests and most recently finals students can step back and enjoy all the fun activities planned. It pays as a reminder that school isn’t just about academics, it’s also about relationships, spirit and memories.
Behind the scenes at Salida High school, the Student Council has played a big part in planning Fun Week. Over a few weeks students council members have come together to brainstorm ideas that include everyone. Sophomore Alice Hull, a member of SHS student council, says “It’s going to be a really fun week to kickstart summer break!”
As the last week of school approaches, anticipation is quickly building throughout students. With a variety of activities, Fun Week will ensure the school year ends on a positive note.
