This year’s Salida High School Boys’ Basketball Team might not be the largest team that the school has ever had, but what really makes them stand out is how hard they play and how close they are as a team. Whether you are a freshman watching and learning how to be on the team or a senior on your last year playing for the high school, it’s easy to see how fast the time has gone for all the players on our basketball team.
One of the biggest strengths of this year’s team is their defense. Brian Ruiz, a varsity player, explains, “We have really good defense even though we don’t have the tallest players; we still make an effort on the court, but every game can always use improvement.” They know they’re good at locking down opponents, but they also know there’s always something they can get better at.
The older players, especially the seniors, have done a lot to help the younger ones to improve. They set the example in practice and during games by pushing everyone to work harder. Ruiz says, “Every person on the team pushes me to be better, but mostly the seniors because they know that the rest of the team has potential.”
Something that really sticks out about this team is their chemistry. You can tell they’re all close, and that helps them play better together. They talk, they support each other, and they stay positive—even during tough games. That kind of bond isn’t something every team has and it makes a big difference.
It’s not just the game moments that make this team special. A lot of the best memories happen during bus rides and after games. Player Logan Rosales says, “One of the things that I’m going to miss the most is the memories.”
Those little moments show how connected the team really is. It’s easy to see why so many of the players call those times their favorite part of the season.
Different players take on different roles to help support the entire team as a whole. One thing about this team is that everyone brings something different to the table personality wise. All of the players have their own responsibilities and strengths, and this is like the glue of the entire team. That’s the attitude the whole team seems to have, do whatever the team needs and go all out.
The Salida high school boys basketball team works for every play, challenges every hard thing they face, and attempts to beat each team they face. One of their main goals this season is to play with effort and leave everything they have on the court.
The Salida High School Boys’ Basketball Team focuses on heart, hard work, and chemistry. We wish them a great season and so much luck for their upcoming games!
