The Basketball program is turning the page with the arrival of Head Coach Cody Donner, who steps into the role with a clear vision and deep personal motivation. For Donner, basketball has always been more than just a game, it’s a way to teach life lessons and build character both on and off the court.
Donner credits his high school coach as the main reason he chose to pursue coaching. The lessons he learned as a student athlete continue to influence how he approaches the game today. “What inspired me to get into coaching was my old high school coach,” Donner said. “Since I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that what he’s instilled in me has made me the man I am today, so hopefully, if I can do that to younger men, myself…that’s my goal.”
Donner had a clear vision for the program. While he wants to achieve success on the court, he also emphasizes accountability and personal development.
“My vision, basketball-wise, outside of teaching accountability to young men, would probably be [to] win the league and make it to the Great Eight.”
When asked about his goals for the season, Donner emphasized creating a culture of hard work and a new team identity.
“My goals for the program are to create a new identity and new culture of hardworking individuals that know how to win, not even just on the court, but off the court as well.”
Hard work is a core value for Donner, and he expects his players to embrace it fully. “Hard work, hard work beats talent every single dang time”
He explains how he motivates players during difficult stretches or after losses: “I motivate the players by reminding them that not only do they learn in wins but also in losses, it’s important to look at the mistakes you make and learn from them.”
Developing younger or less experienced players is also a priority for Donner. He wants his team to understand the importance of teamwork. “I plan on developing [younger players], by teaching them how to play the game the right way. It takes 5 to win a basketball game, not just one guy.”
Coach Donner’s arrival signals a fresh start for Salida high school basketball. With his focus on hard work, accountability, and developing players both on and off the court, he is ready to lead the program towards success.
As the season approaches, Donner’s leadership promises to shape not only the team’s performance but also the character of the players, ensuring the lessons learned on the court carry beyond the game.
